Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the end of the global health emergency for monkeypox, following a continued decline in cases and deaths.
According to Bahrain News Agency, WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the decision was based on the recommendation of the organisation’s Emergency Committee. He emphasised that while the global emergency status has been lifted, the disease continues to be a public health concern, particularly in Africa.
WHO had previously declared monkeypox a global health emergency in August 2024 due to its outbreak, which was primarily concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
