UNRWA: Aid Distribution in Gaza Becomes Death Trap

UNRWA: Aid Distribution in Gaza Becomes Death Trap

Gaza: Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini warned that the distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip has become a "death trap" in light of the ongoing Israeli bombardment.

According to Oman News Agency, Lazzarini issued a statement urging Israel to lift the blockade and allow aid to enter and be distributed safely and without hindrance under UN supervision to avert famine. He emphasized the urgent need for this action to prevent further suffering among the civilians in the region.

Lazzarini highlighted reports from international paramedics on the ground, stating that dozens of starving civilians had recently been killed and injured by Israeli forces. He voiced strong criticism of the Israeli plan for distributing aid, which designates a delivery point in the far south of Rafah. This plan forces thousands of desperate civilians to traverse long distances to an area severely impacted by Israeli bombardment, further exacerbating their hardships.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs echoed these concerns, stating that Israel's military-style distribution plan falls short of addressing the significant humanitarian needs in Gaza. The office has previously described the Gaza Strip as "the hungriest place on earth," highlighting that only a minimal amount of aid has been allowed to enter the region.
