Standing Does Not Improve Heart Health: Study


A new study from the University of Sydney revealed that standing for long periods does not significantly improve heart health compared to sitting. Instead, it may increase the risk of circulatory issues such as deep vein thrombosis and varicose veins, according to Medical News Today.

The research analyzed data from 83,000 UK Biobank participants, using accelerometers to track how much time they spent sitting or standing daily. Researchers examined occurrences of cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke, alongside conditions such as orthostatic hypotension, varicose veins, and venous ulcers.

The study found no significant link between standing time and reduced cardiovascular disease risk. However, it also reported that standing did not offer long-term cardiovascular benefits over sitting.

In contrast, sitting for more than 10 hours a day was associated with a 26% increased risk of orthostatic circulatory diseases with each additional hour, highlighting the potential dan
gers of prolonged inactivity.
