Seminar Explores Historical Sources of Dhofar

Salalah: A seminar titled “Sources of Dhofar History: Reading Historical Sources” was held today at Sultan Qaboos Youth Compound for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The seminar aimed to highlight historical sources in the governorate of Dhofar and discussed ways of reading and analysing those sources in a manner that preserves the governorate’s historical identity.

According to Oman News Agency, the event was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. It focused on local, Arab, and foreign sources that documented the history of Dhofar Governorate through various eras.

The seminar covered three methods of documentation that were presented by specialists in history. The first method, titled “Dhofar Through Local Sources”, dealt with the importance of archives that were kept by ‘Houses of Knowledge’ that served as an authentic source for documenting the political, social, and scientific history of Dhofar.

The second method, titled “Dhofar Through Documents”, discussed the writings of Arab travellers and geographers who documented Dhofar’s urban, religious, and cultural centres.

The third method discussed foreign sources on Dhofar history through the points of view of Western travellers who documented places and people in their travel literature.
