Second Round of Lebanon-Israel Talks Gets Underway in Washington

Second Round of Lebanon-Israel Talks Gets Underway in Washington

Washington: The second round of talks between Lebanon and Israel is being held later today in Washington, marking the first negotiations between the two sides since a ten-day ceasefire took effect.

According to Oman News Agency, a US State Department official stated that the talks will include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Israeli Ambassador to Washington Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanese Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad. US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee are also attending the discussions.

The two countries held their first round of talks in Washington on 14 April 2026, which were the first such negotiations since 1993, in an attempt to end the war. A Lebanese official source indicated that Lebanon would request a one-month extension of the truce, which expires at the end of this week. The Lebanese delegation is also expected to push for a halt to Israeli demolition operations in areas where Israeli forces are present and for full adherence to the ceasefire.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced on Wednesday that efforts were ongoing to extend the ceasefire period. A statement from the presidency highlighted that the negotiations being prepared are based on a complete cessation of Israeli attacks and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.

During the first meeting, both countries agreed to initiate direct negotiations 'at a time and place to be mutually agreed upon,' as stated by a State Department spokesperson at the time.
