Scientists Make Progress on Continuum Robot Obstacle Avoidance

Chinese scientists, led by Liu Hao from the Shenyang Institute of Automation, have advanced research in active obstacle avoidance for continuum robots, potentially boosting the intelligence of robot-assisted surgeries.

The collaboration with Zhang Zhongtao’s team at Beijing Friendship Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, resulted in findings published in the International Journal of Robotics Research.

Continuum robots, navigating complex human body cavities, can now navigate collisions effectively, enhancing surgical safety.

The team’s proposed control framework addresses challenges posed by flexible robot structures, offering a concise expression of geometric models and collision detection methods.
