Oman Affirms its Unwavering Stance Backing Palestinians Right to Self-determination

The Sultanate of Oman has reaffirmed its unwavering stance backing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital on the borders of 4 June 1967, in accordance with the Security Council’s resolutions issued in this regard, as well as the Arab Peace Initiative, the principle of land for peace and the vision of the international community on the principle of the two-state solution, and in accordance with the rules and principles of the international law, and in support of the diplomatic and legal action led by the State of Palestine to preserve the rights of the Palestinians and protect them from the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation authority.

This was stated during the written pleading submitted by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman at the headquarters of the International Court of Justice in The Hague in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The move is pursuant to the decision of the United Nations’ General Assembly adopted on 30 December 2022, to request the Court to issue an advisory opinion regarding the implications resulting from Israel’s continued violations against the right of the Palestinian people for self-determination.

In the pleading, the Sultanate of Oman underscored the importance of the international community assuming its responsibility to stop settlements and Israeli plans to annex parts of the occupied Palestinian lands. It also stressed the need to preserve the historical, legal and religious status of the occupied city of Jerusalem. It also asserted the significance of backing the steps for the State of Palestine to obtain the status of a fully-fledged member state in the United Nations.
