Al suwaiq: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has completed the maintenance of 'Sur Al-Hilal' boundary wall in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq, Governorate of North Al Batinah. The project included the restoration of the adjoining defensive towers and internal corridors as part of the Ministry's programme to preserve historical sites in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
According to Oman News Agency, Khalifa Al Wahaibi, Head of the Section of Restoration and Maintenance-Directorate General of Antiquities, stated that 'Sur Al-Hilal' wall is a significant historical landmark in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq. He noted that the fortification wall's construction dates back to around 1845, with the project costing RO186,822.
Eng. Khalsa Khalifa Al Salmia, Director of the Department of Restoration and Maintenance, emphasized that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism places great importance on archaeological sites in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. She highlighted that 'Sur Al-Hilal' wall is one of the projects aimed at showcasing the cultural and historical value of heritage landmarks and supporting sustainable tourism development in the area.
'Sur Al-Hilal' stands as evidence of the deep-rooted history of the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq and represents the Wilayat's commercial significance in the early twentieth century. The facility was historically a hub for exchanging local goods and products and continues to maintain its unique architectural stature, symbolizing defense and reflecting the skill of traditional Omani builders.
