Valletta: Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced today that the Labour Party, which he leads, has won a fourth consecutive term in the general elections-an unprecedented achievement in the country’s history. Speaking to journalists, Abela stated, “This is a victory for the entire people, based on the programme we presented,” adding that the results showed his party had “won a strong mandate.”
According to Oman News Agency, the Labour Party secured a comfortable parliamentary majority, although it appeared to be smaller than the one recorded in 2022, when it received 55 percent of the total votes. Charles Bonello, Secretary General of the opposition Nationalist Party, conceded defeat in remarks to TVM, the state broadcaster, but noted that his party had managed to reduce the Labour Party’s majority.
The elections were held on Saturday, with a voter turnout of 87.4 percent-a slight increase compared to the 2022 general elections. Abela is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow Monday. He succeeded Joseph Muscat as leader of the Labour Party in 2020.
