Iraq unbans Telegram after responding to security demands

The Ministry of Communications said it is unbanning Telegram Messenger across Iraq as of tomorrow, Sunday, after the latter’s administration met Iraq’s security requirements.

The operator of the end-to-end encrypted freemium in Iraq has agreed to disclose the identities of persons or entities who share covertly the data of Iraqi citizens, the Ministry said in a statement, noting that the company agreed to cooperate fully with the competent authorities in Iraq.

The Ministry affirmed that it has nothing against the freedom of expression, noting that the operators of social networking websites need to show respect for the laws and privacies of the countries they operate in and protect the data of users.

On August 6, the Iraqi authorities banned Telegram due to what they called breaches of the parameters of national security and the operators’ refusal to coordinate with the security services of Iraq.
