Beirut: Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Ahmad Al-Hajjar, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to holding the 2026 parliamentary elections on schedule in May, in accordance with the current electoral law. He emphasized that the constitutional deadlines outlined in the law will be respected, noting that the final date for diaspora voter registration is set for November 20.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Minister Al-Hajjar spoke after a legislative session at Parliament, recalling previous doubts about the feasibility of holding municipal and local elections. He remarked that despite skepticism about whether those elections would take place, they were conducted on time.

Hajjar further revealed that coordination with the Minister of Foreign Affairs had begun weeks ago, and the registration mechanism for Lebanese expatriates has already been finalized. He expressed hope that once the Foreign Minister returns from abroad, the registration process can officially begin within days, allowing approximately one month and 20 days to complete it.

Al-Hajjar also mentioned that the Cabinet has assigned a ministerial committee to study the electoral law, of which he is a member. He noted that a report detailing the challenges involved in implementing the law was presented, but the Cabinet has not decided to draft a new electoral law. As Minister of Interior, he is bound to implement the current law and adhere to the registration deadlines in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
