Muscat:The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) has launched an international educational and career-training programme named "Uniquely Abled Academy." This initiative is designed to empower individuals with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and Down syndrome by developing their professional and technical skills, thereby enhancing their prospects for joining the labor market.
According to Oman News Agency, the launch ceremony of the Uniquely Abled Academy (UAA) was held under the patronage of Dr. Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Social Development and GUtech, with the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) leading the project.
The programme aims to improve the vocational rehabilitation framework for individuals with disabilities. It focuses on identifying their unique capabilities, honing their skills, and providing them with technical and professional expertise that aligns with labor market needs. In its initial phase, the programme targets individuals with autism spectrum disorder through a specialized year-long curriculum in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology. The curriculum includes six months of technical and applied training at GUtech, followed by six months of practical hands-on training in industrial workplaces.
