ECOWAS: No need for UNSC approval for military intervention in Niger

There is no need to get a UN Security Council (UNSC) approval to intervene militarily in Niger, Abdel-Fatau Musah, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said Sunday.

Military intervention does not mean to rule out a diplomatic solution to the crisis, Musah was quoted in a statement by local media.

The bloc has legal bases for intervention in Niger, and it dons not need a consent from the UNSC, he noted.

In case of military intervention, there would be an overthrow against the military council from inside the army, he elaborated, referring to no consensus on the current coup.

The ECOWAS parliament is planning to dispatch a commission to Niger to meet with the leaders of the coup in a new attempt to convince the military council to rescind the notion of controlling power and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, Musah said.

Meanwhile, the chiefs of staff of ECOWAS member states decided Saturday to delay a scheduled meeting for some technical reasons.
