Economy Ministry Reviews Efforts to Upgrade Oman’s Status on International Competitiveness Map


The Ministry of Economy today organized a press briefing titled “Towards a more competitive Oman”. The meeting reviewed the Sultanate of Oman’s competitiveness performance, efforts and initiatives to consolidate the country’s status on the international arena since the launch of Oman Vision 2040.

The meeting stressed the significant progress made by Oman in a number of competitiveness indicators in recent years, reflecting the government’s keenness to keep pace with objective set by Oman Vision 2040. It provided a follow-up about the implementation of annual plans undertaken by national teams tasked with improving competitiveness and enhancing integration among government departments concerned.

The meeting elaborated on the next steps to be undertaken, including preparations to join the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) and to gain membership, during 2025, for Oman in the World Bank’s Business Readiness Index . The index serves as one of the most important global indicators that provi
de a broad perspective on governments’ efforts to support and expand private sector activities and increase the sector’s contribution to sustainable growth.

Dr. Said bin Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy, stressed that the press briefing was aimed at enhancing communication with experts and all those interested in economic affairs. It underlined efforts made in a more in-depth manner to highlight the Ministry’s major interests and provided an opportunity for dialogue that was aimed to outline the Ministry’s plans.

The minister affirmed that Oman took great steps forward in indicators of significance to the realization of Oman Vision 2040 goals. For example, in the Environmental Performance Index (issued by Yale and Columbia Universities), Oman occupied the 54th place globally in the 2024 index, a big leap upwards from the 149th rank two years ago, Al Saqri added.

The minister pointed out that Oman also advanced from the 95th to 56th place in the Economic Freedom Index (issued by the Heritage Foundatio
n for the year 2024)

In the E-Government Index (issued by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat) Oman advanced 9 places, from 50th to 41st place. It also made good progress in all six global governance indicators issued by the World Bank.

During the media gathering, the National Competitiveness Office presented a visual display about efforts made to improve the country’s status in a number of global indicators specified in Oman Vision 2040. Steps in this direction were spearheaded by developing laws, regulations and procedures. The action teams concerned also communicated with institutions and organizations that issue competitiveness reports with the aim of updating data related to the Sultanate of Oman.
