Nato: NATO leaders are preparing to unveil tens of billions of dollars in weapons deals in Ankara today, signalling their response to US calls for a significant increase in European defence spending. The announcements are expected during a NATO defence industry forum, ahead of US President Donald Trump's arrival for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a summit dinner with alliance leaders later today.
According to Oman News Agency, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that Europeans had made significant strides in defence spending, driven in part by concerns over Russia following its war with Ukraine. Rutte noted that last month, European NATO members and Canada increased their defence spending in real terms by $90 billion in 2025 compared with 2024, bringing the total to more than $570 billion. This represents nearly a 20 percent rise in just one year.
