Muscat: The Council of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) convened its fourth meeting for the academic year 2025/2026, led by Dr. Madiha Ahmed Al Shaibani, Minister of Education and Chairperson of the University Council. The meeting focused on reviewing the university's progress and the implementation status of previous decisions and recommendations.
According to Oman News Agency, the Council approved updated academic regulations for undergraduate studies, aiming to modernize SQU's academic framework. This update includes new articles for breaking ties in admissions for bachelor's programs at the College of Education, ensuring fairness in the selection process.
The Council also endorsed a new minor in nanotechnology at the College of Science, designed to equip students with multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in this rapidly expanding field. This initiative aims to prepare graduates for roles in research, development, and advanced technology industries.
Additionally, the Council introduced a specialization in Special Education within the Master of Arts in Psychology program at the College of Education, focusing on developing specialized national professionals and enhancing research and practices in special education.
Institutional advancements were discussed, including renaming the Preparatory Studies Center to the College of Preparatory Studies, reflecting its academic roles and competencies. The Council also reviewed the university's strategic risk management system, praising it for enhancing institutional readiness and sustainability.
On the financial front, the Council approved SQU's annual budget for the fiscal year 2027, highlighting efforts to optimize resource use to support educational and research objectives.
The meeting concluded with the approval of the mid-year graduate lists for the academic year 2025/2026, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
