Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik today issued Royal Decree No. 89/2025, marking a significant step with the ratification of the Sultanate of Oman’s joining the “International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” which was originally adopted in New York on 16 December 1966.
According to Oman News Agency, Article (1) of the decree confirms Oman’s ratification of the Covenant, adhering to the version attached to the decree. This move signifies Oman’s commitment to upholding the principles outlined in the Covenant, which aims to protect civil and political rights universally.
Article (2) directs the relevant authorities to deposit the joining document of the Covenant, ensuring compliance with its provisions. It also highlights the importance of considering the reservation and interpretative notes attached, which allows Oman to clarify its stance on certain aspects of the Covenant.
Article (3) mandates that the decree be published in the Official Gazette and enforced immediately from its date of issue, ensuring transparency and prompt implementation of this international commitment.
