Beirut: Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel announced his bloc’s withdrawal from the parliamentary session in protest against the failure to include the draft electoral law on the agenda. Speaker Nabih Berri, responding to interventions by several MPs, declared: ‘Enough attempts to bypass the current electoral law.’
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the decision to exclude the draft electoral law from the session’s agenda prompted strong reactions from the Kataeb Bloc. The bloc viewed the absence of the item as a significant oversight, leading to its decision to leave the session. The protest underscores ongoing tensions over electoral law reforms within the Lebanese Parliament.
The session was marked by interventions from multiple MPs who addressed the necessity of discussing and possibly amending the electoral law. However, Speaker Berri maintained a firm stance, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the existing electoral framework and dismissing attempts to sideline it. The lack of consensus on including the draft law suggests continued debates and possible future confrontations in parliamentary proceedings.
