Madrid: Kylian Mbapp© scored a hat trick, Erling Haaland stayed on the bench injured, and Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League.
According to Oman News Agency, Mbapp©'s trio of goals in the fourth, 33rd, and 61st minutes secured a 3-1 victory for Real Madrid, increasing their aggregate lead to 6-3 over the 2023 champions in their knockout playoff. Erling Haaland was unable to start for Manchester City due to a knee injury sustained during an English Premier League game last Saturday.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed over French rival Brest with a 7-0 win, achieving a 10-0 aggregate score, and will face either Liverpool or Barcelona in the round of 16.
PSV Eindhoven and Juventus were heading into extra time after the Dutch side led 2-1, leveling the aggregate score at 3-3. United States international Timothy Weah scored for Juventus.
In an earlier match, Borussia Dortmund, starting with a 3-0 lead at home, held Sporting Lisbon to a 0-0 draw. Sporting's campaign faltered after coach Ruben Amorim departed for Manchester United in November.
Real Madrid, PSG, Dortmund, and PSV join Bayern Munich, Benfica, Club Brugge, and Feyenoord as playoff round winners who will be unseeded in the upcoming draw. These teams will host the first-leg games on 4-5 March 2025.
The top eight in the standings three weeks prior - Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, and Aston Villa - bypassed the playoffs round and are seeded in the round of 16 draw. They will host second legs on 11-12 March 2025.
The round of 16 features a new seeded bracket format, similar to tennis, for the knockout stage. Real Madrid, as the 11th-place team and No. 11 seed, is set to face either Atletico or Leverkusen, who placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Top-seeded Liverpool will compete against No. 15 PSG or No. 16 Benfica.
